The Weight of Justice: Leadership Lessons from Inside America's Toughest Prisons: A Correctional Officer's Journey

Michael Cantrell
Michael Cantrell is a retired federal corrections leader, author, trainer, and speaker with more than 29 years of experience working inside some of America’s toughest prisons. Over the course of his career, he served in high-security institutions, crisis response operations, and executive leadership roles, eventually retiring as Chief of the Office of Emergency Preparedness for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington, D.C.
Cantrell is also the host of The Prison Officer Podcast, where he shares candid conversations about corrections culture, leadership, wellness, and the unseen realities of working behind prison walls.
In The Weight of Justice, Cantrell draws from nearly three decades behind the walls to tell the stories few people ever hear — the emotional toll, the leadership challenges, the chaos, and the human cost carried by the men and women responsible for maintaining order inside America’s prisons.
