The darkness was overwhelming. She felt the tips of leaves and twigs graze against her fingers, grass blades against her toes, and heard a crackling sound in the distance. It was calling to her, pulling her forward through the forest, through the dark. A burning smell filled the air, and she had an eerie feeling as though she were being watched.
When Pavula turned around a large oak, she stopped in her tracks. There before her, through the darkness, she saw and marveled at an enormous creature standing at least thirty feet high. There was a fire in its eyes that burned so brightly she could discern its monstrous silhouette and knew instantly that she was gazing upon... a dragon.
As the dragon looked over her inquisitively, the forest came alight with tall flames burning all around, but Pavula felt no heat emanating from the inferno. With the dragon illuminated, she could see it was covered in blood-red scales with quills spread thick like fur down its spine to the tip of its tail. Smoke drifted up from great nostrils as it lowered its head down toward her.
Pavula wasn’t sure why, but she was not afraid of this beast. Instead, she stood perfectly still while the dragon cast its eye over her, examining her curiously. After several moments, it pulled back its head, and Pavula heard a rumbling within its chest. Suddenly, the dragon opened its great jaws, and she realized that it was preparing to breathe fire. Every part of her body told her to run, but she couldn’t move. She stood there, frozen in place, staring the colossal beast in its fiery eyes, and then she saw it. Fire came forth from the dragon right toward Pavula...
The Prophecy:
Elf born, raised by wolves, and talks to dragons… Who is this girl? She wants to find out, too, as she abandons the safe confines of her home to discover the truth for herself. Blessed with a magic unlike any before, she discovers a world at war ruled over by monstrous dragons, where the land has been slowly dying beyond that of her cozy little wolf den.
