No drugs? That's a big claim. But it's true. The techniques in this book don't need chemical assistance. In fact they work better when you don't alter your state with alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, or any of the other socially accepted uppers or downers. To be clear though, don't stop taking anything your doctor or therapist has prescribed without consulting them. No therapy. It's not a course, the whole solution is here. No DVDs to buy, no audio downloads, no online training. Lots of Gadgets. My first version of this book said "No gadgets." but I realised I as missing a trick... several tricks actually. For example I use a wireless speaker to play the sound of rain on leaves, a kind of randomised white-noise overlaid with a gentle pitter-patter. It covers background noises in the room and outside and I find it soothing. There are dozens of other ideas inside. Potent, not Perfect The mental tools in this book are potent, but not perfect, they will work for about 70% of the population. If you are one of the lucky ones, they give you the power to shape your environment, both awake and asleep. But with power must come responsibility. They need patience and practice... but the practice is fun. Bedroom Engineering There's a temptation to medicalise insomnia when the truth might be much simpler. If your room is too warm, too cold or too noisy that can be a problem, or make light sleep caused by a medical issue even worse. Is your bed comfortable, or are you tolerating lumps, bumps and pressure points? Dreamscape Design Most of us don't remember our dreams all the time. But when you do, you often see a link to whatever you were thinking as you fell asleep. Great if it's something relaxing, or fun, not so good if it's stressful or nasty. By engineering a mental landscape to fall asleep in you have somewhere positive and calming kickstart a better night's sleep. Instant Relaxation Having a dreamscape is no use ti you if you're so overwhelmed with distractions that you can't get there. Those distractions divide into physical, physiological factors. Almost all of them can be controlled completely or made less severe with the right tools and habits. Do not try this part without talking to your health professionals first. The Staircase to Sleep Sometimes you just need a little extra help to get off to sleep. The day before a holiday or a dental appointment. You need an off switch, or a reliable to sooth yourself to sleep. This section has way to achieve instant physical and mental relaxation and a method to sooth yourself to sleep using the dreamscape we designed earlier.
