About the time the Roman Empire was collapsing on Terra, the lush green planet Alaria suffered a planet-wide catastrophe that ended all hope for any kind of normal life on its surface. The Alari, a dryad-like race, fled the planet aboard great starships that attempted to mimic life on their once idyllic homeworld.

Not everyone got off the planet, though. Not everyone who remained, died.

Two thousand years later, the Alari (The People) and the Alari Voss (The People Left Behind) have met humanity and integrated into the many societies that have colonized the stars.

Azara Xyris's ancestors survived the destruction of their homeworld's ecosystem, and now Azara is an interpreter for the human xenoarchaeologists who are delving into the cataclysm. When the team discovers an eight-meter-wide diamond capping an access silo that descends far underground, Azara and her team learn more about the true Vossian history than anyone ever dreamed possible.
