Samantha Fox is warned to beware of "him who bears the mark of the serpent." A fortune-teller advises her to seek her protector— Maahes, an Egyptian lion deity whose name means "he who is truly beside her." Her research leads her to believe that she's the subject of a curse from long ago. A curse that once claimed her biological mother's life.

She meets German investor Jaeger Lehmann at work, whom she believes to be her protector.
