HARLEY DODGE named for reasons unfathomable, skipped out on her high school graduation, a boyfriend and Boolee, West Virginia to marry Dickie Trollop and live the rich, city life in Amarillo, Texas. Fifteen years and one teenage daughter later, she came back to her hillbilly roots, broken in both heart and wallet to jumpstart a second beginning while keeping her left-handed, clairvoyant talent secret.
Tasered and car impounded Harley’s financial prospects are grim. She decides to use her talent to locate ten million in buried gold. Unfortunately, several problems present themselves: the key has gone missing. Harley’s Bentley is blown to smithereens and Newbie is murdered, found on Red’s property with Harley’s missing key fused to his hand. Red and Harley are the main suspects.
While avoiding the police, Laney’s pleas to return to Texas, Aunt Bertie’s questions of why they came back and a past history she’d much rather forget, Harley learns Dickie is back in Boolee to claim the insurance payout on the bombed Bentley. Shortly thereafter, her daughter is kidnapped. But before she can rescue her she learns Dickie wants the key to save him from his financial problems that he initially caused in Texas.
