On a small Scottish island in 1906, women have few options, unless, like Chrissie Reid, they take the law into their own hands.

On the 14th of April, 1920, Chrissie Reid received a letter from a dead man.

No one knew he was dead and buried in the byre, except Chrissie herself.

Since that fateful night fourteen years ago, she had thought she was safe. Now that security has been shattered.

Over the years, Chrissie found a new love, but he, too, has a deep and terrible secret.

The past won't stay buried and, with the arrival of that letter, Chrissie discovers that nothing is as it seems.

A series of events over which she has no control are set in motion.

Lies and secrets are uncovered, leading to a dramatic and tragic climax.
