Overview of the African Penguin

The African Penguin, also known as the Jackass Penguin due to its braying call, is a penguin species that is native to the southwestern coast of Africa. They are characterized by their black and white plumage, with a band of black feathers running from the eye to the side of the head, and distinctive pink glandular areas above the eyes. African Penguins are relatively small, with adults reaching a height of around 70 centimeters (28 inches) and a weight of 1.5-2.5 kilograms (3-5 lbs). They feed on anchovies, sardines and other small fish, which they catch while swimming in the ocean. Their population has been severely reduced due to human activities such as overfishing, oil spills, and habitat destruction, and they are currently considered an endangered species. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and increase their numbers.
