In 2035, scientists at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Japan experimented on an unknown bacteria from space. Everyone inside was dead in seventy-two hours. The authorities thought the incident had been contained until people began getting sick outside of the laboratory. All of Japan was quarantined from the rest of the world. Only three survived.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention evacuated the three survivors to an uncharted island in the West Pacific for further testing. Meanwhile, the United Nations and the World Health Organization gathered the world's brightest bacteriologists, microbiologists, and epidemiologists at MIT. They had one mission: find a cure.

They succeeded. Three days later, the mystery drug was administered to everyone; the old and the young. No one was spared. The new cure eradicated the disease but its side effects caused an even greater problem to mankind: infertility.

People began to die off but no babies were born. The human race was on a course for total extinction unless they found a cure for the cure. The three Japan survivors were sealed away in an underground bunker and never seen again. The scientists responsible for the birth control disappeared. World leaders and key members of government and society were evacuated to secure locations.
