Born into poverty in the early 1950s in Manchester, the author's childhood was tough to say the least. At sixteen, he signed up to the Merchant Navy and his love affair with the sea began. He travelled the world, almost started a new life in New Zealand (before the police caught up with him) and broadened his horizons more than he would ever have dared dream of in his dark schooldays.
