INTERVIEW WITH RAYNER YE

How did you write the YuFu’s Run series?

Differently. I used the Amateur on the Run Sequence for book 1. I got that planning structure from Paul Tomlinson’s book: Suspense Thriller. How to write chase, spy, legal, medical, psychological, political & techno-thrillers. Book 2:- I wrote into the dark without a plan. Book 3:- I dictated into the dark (while out walking) without a plan. Book 4:- I used Paul Tomlinson’s book again, but used his techno-thriller sequence.

Did you use Paul Tomlinson’s book for writing or dictating any other books or series?

Only one dystoian apocalypse audiobook series on the Wahlbeck App. It’s called The Wrong World, and I used the Amateur on the Run sequence for that.

Can you tell me anything about YuFu?

He’s a main character in my first ever series: Plan8 Slaves/Firesnake. I liked him a lot. I enjoyed giving him more and more problems. I already knew a lot about this family man who can never do things right. I like him because he’s imperfect. I’ve been told it’s risky using a Chinese lead character, but come on, this world is full of different ethnicities, and so is my Seven Solar System Plan8 Alliance.

But that Firesnake series was metaphysical. Does YuFu's Run contain fantastical elements, too?

No. My husband suggested I write sci-fi without magic, and I listened to him. No one uses the portals. No one river-shifts/water wayfars/river and rain travels.

But YuFu did these magical things before.

He did. But the secret service keeps wiping memories from the computer chip in his brain. He forgot.

Ha ha. Are there cyborgs in this series?

Yes, yes, and yes. I won’t apologise for having so many cyborgs. It’s an obsession of mine. I’m sure I’ll grow out of it at some point.

Like your Firesnake series, is YuFu’s Run based on your experiences?

Not at all. This series has nothing about me. The Firesnake was because I had stuff to write out of my system.

Are there spaceships in this series?

A little in book 1. Very little in books 2 and 3. A lot in book 4.

Is there any futuristic technology?

Of course. Book 1 is set in Tushing’s system and the moons which orbit that gas giant (including the fertile and technologically advanced Mayleeda Moon.) The Mayleedian Secret Service have fantastic spy-tech.

Will this series stop at four books?

No. But each book ties up any loose ends. I wrote book 5 ages ago but have been writing other series.

Do any other characters from the Firesnake/Plan8 Slaves series appear in YuFu’s Run?

Occasionally, yes. You get to see and hear a little about Aedre and Akachi. Also, Z’Das, Noomy Foster, and Android 3333 appear in this series.

Is it essential for the readers to read your first two series if they’re to read this?

Definitely not. Actually, there are different readers. I’d prefer sci-fi reader who don’t like fantasy not to read my Firesnake series or Red Star and go straight into YuFu’s Run, followed by Cyborg Assassin.
