Seventeen-year-old Larken Marche will never walk without assistance again. Any hope she’d had of being a professional athlete was shattered in an extremist attack. Too damaged even for twenty-third-century medicine, she’s relegated to using a cane to get around and must rechart the future she expected to live.

The event that crushed her body and dreams also promoted her to national fame. Larken doesn’t give interviews, and she hates the fame, preferring to live a normal, quiet life if she can’t live the one she’d always dreamed of. She attends the University of Washington, which gives her some sense of normalcy until her roommate, Samantha Caldwell, disappears.

Larken’s roommate finally returns as the victim of a horrendous attack. Larken is plagued with hallucinations and a pervading sense of helplessness after Sam’s attack. She must decide whether she has what it takes to beat back the extremists who targeted her and Sam or cower in fear of an ever-strengthening extremist threat who still seem to have Larken and her friends in their cross-hairs.
