Andy Schouten
Andy Schouten’s journey in the Army began at just 17 years old when he enlisted in field artillery. His passion for service and leadership led him to become an officer through Marquette University’s ROTC program. Over the years, Andy served in a variety of field artillery officer assignments, each contributing to the depth of his military career. His expertise was honed through numerous military exercises, unique missions, and unparalleled experiences—such as being inside a tunnel under the Korean Demilitarized Zone, savoring a Dunkel Weiss in a German beer garden, firing howitzer cannons, launching rockets, and navigating tracked vehicles in challenging terrains.

In 2006, Andy was deployed to the rugged, austere mountains of Afghanistan as a combat advisor. His yearlong deployment marked a pivotal moment in his career, where he lived alongside and trained Afghan Army units. This deployment not only provided him with extensive combat experience but also immersed him in a culture vastly different from his own. His days ranged from eating Afghan foot bread to engaging in life-threatening firefights, all of which profoundly shaped his perspective on war and life.

Andy retired as an Army Major after 27 years of distinguished service, with 20 years spent in an active-duty status. Throughout his career, he demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication, and a commitment to the values instilled in him during his time in the Army. His legacy not only lives on through his service but also in his writings, where he continues to inspire others with his story of perseverance and healing.
