Glen Smale

About the author

Having had a driving passion for all things motoring since a tender age, South African-born Smale started his professional motor journalism and photography career back in 1994. In 1997 Glen launched Autosport & Classics, a classic motoring and historic motor sport magazine in South Africa, and has to date contributed features and photographs to numerous international motoring magazines.

In 2004 Glen was commissioned by Haynes Publishing to write his first book, Porsche: The Carrera Dynasty. Subsequent titles have included Porsche 917: The complete photographic history, Porsche at Le Mans, Jaguar E-type: Portrait of a Design Icon (for which he received the Laurin and Klement 'Design Writer of the Year' award in 2007) and Porsche 956/962: A photographic history. To date he has written a total of eleven books on sports cars and motor racing, comprising seven on Porsche, two on Ferrari, and one each on Jaguar and AC/Shelby Cobra cars.

Increasingly Smale has found himself drawn to the Porsche marque, as the German brand, which started from very humble beginnings in the hills of Austria, has achieved far more on the motor sport front than many other, much larger organisations. Smale’s work has brought him into contact with designers, engineers, famous racing drivers and team managers who have all been interviewed along the way for various book and magazine projects. Smale counts it an absolute privilege to sit face-to-face with the likes of Derek Bell, Jochen Mass, Brian Redman, Vic Elford, Jürgen Barth, Klaus Bischof, Norbert Singer, Hans Mezger, Herbert Linge, Allan McNish, Mark Webber, Brendon Hartley, Patrick Pilet, Jörg Bergmeister, and many, many others.

Being an accredited journalist and photographer at events like the Le Mans 24-Hour race and at the Silverstone 6-Hours, and others, allows him access to the paddock, pit garages and pit lane during some of the most spectacular events. Smale has been a member of the Guild of Motoring Writers since 1995 as well as the Western Group of Motoring Writers. He lives in Carmarthenshire with his wife, Elke, and together they run Virtual Motorpix, a motoring and motor sport photo agency specialising in sourcing hard-to-find images.
